Opening Hours

Aquarium La Rochelle is open every day of the year, including most public holidays, making it an ideal destination regardless of when you plan to visit. Opening times vary by season to accommodate the different levels of visitor demand throughout the year. During the peak summer months of July and August, the aquarium operates extended hours to ensure all visitors have sufficient time to enjoy the full experience without feeling rushed.

We strongly recommend arriving early, particularly during French school holidays and the summer season, when the aquarium receives its highest visitor volumes. Arriving at or shortly after opening time allows you to enjoy the quieter atmosphere of the first hour before visitor numbers reach their daily peak. Last entry is typically accepted one hour before the scheduled closing time, so plan accordingly to avoid disappointment at the door.

La Rochelle is served by the A10 motorway from Paris and the N137/A837 from Nantes and Bordeaux. The aquarium is on the city waterfront, close to the Old Port area. Several public car parks are located within comfortable walking distance, including the Parking de la Ville en Bois and Parking du Vieux-Port. Parking can be scarce during peak summer months, so arriving early in the morning is strongly advisable. Electric vehicle charging points are available in some of the city centre car parks.

By Train

La Rochelle Ville railway station connects the city directly to Paris Montparnasse by TGV in approximately three hours, to Bordeaux in around two hours, and to Nantes in approximately ninety minutes. From the station, the aquarium is accessible by city bus, taxi or on foot in around twenty to twenty-five minutes. The waterfront walk is particularly pleasant in good weather and passes several points of interest along the way. Both SNCF and Ouigo services serve the La Rochelle route.

By Bus & Tram

The Yélo network operates the urban bus and transport services within La Rochelle and its surrounding area. Several routes pass close to the aquarium and the Old Port district. Network maps are available at the railway station, the tourism office and online. The Yélo app provides real-time information about bus timings and route planning. Single tickets and day passes are available from the driver or from the Yélo app. Services run frequently throughout the day seven days a week.

By Bicycle

La Rochelle is renowned as one of France's most bicycle-friendly cities, with an outstanding network of dedicated cycle paths and lanes. The Yélo Vélo public bicycle hire scheme operates docking stations throughout the city, including at the railway station, making it easy for visitors to collect a bicycle on arrival and ride along the scenic harbour front to the aquarium. The route is flat, well-signed and genuinely enjoyable. Cycling is a popular, practical and affordable way to explore La Rochelle.

Visitors using wheelchairs or mobility aids are accommodated throughout the facility.

The team can provide specific guidance and make any necessary arrangements to ensure the experience is as enjoyable as possible for all members of your group.

What to Expect on Arrival

Useful information for when you arrive at the aquarium.

Can I bring food and drinks inside?

Outside food and drink is generally not permitted inside the main exhibit areas of the aquarium. The on-site restaurant and cafe offer a wide range of options including hot meals, sandwiches, salads, snacks, soft drinks, coffees and teas. Children's menus are available, as are options for common dietary requirements. There are seating areas near the entrance where visitors can rest and have a drink during their visit. Please check current policies directly with the aquarium before your visit.

Is photography permitted inside?

Personal photography for non-commercial purposes is generally welcome throughout the aquarium. Flash photography is typically prohibited in certain areas as it can disturb marine animals. Professional equipment including tripods and lighting rigs may not be permitted without prior arrangement. Modern smartphones and compact cameras perform excellently in the aquarium's lighting conditions and produce impressive results when photographing through the glass tanks. Please follow all signage regarding photography within individual exhibits.

Are there luggage storage facilities?

Locker and cloakroom facilities are typically available near the entrance to the aquarium, allowing visitors to store bags, coats and larger items securely during their visit. A small fee may apply for locker use. Arriving with lighter luggage than you might otherwise carry can make the experience considerably more comfortable, particularly during the busy summer months when visitor numbers are at their highest and the building can become warm in the afternoon.
